"Alternative medicine" (alt-med) practitioners are very vocal in touting their unproven (and ineffective, if you're lucky; some are actually dangerous) remedies for all sorts of ills, real or imagined.

Followers of these practices resort to all kinds of ploys when trying to beat down rationalists and bamboozle the less well-informed: a plethora of interlinked websites, sock-puppetry (using multiple accounts to post to a website); legal and physical threats, libel, aggressive political lobbying and sheer bad faith. It is also not unknown for them to openly ignore the law.
